The Skora team is driven by one simple mission: To help runners stay injury-free for life.
BF Running: When and why did you start Skora?
David: I’ve been running barefoot for 9 years, and have had the idea for 8 years. At the time there was nothing on the market that performed or blended the true biomechanics of a minimalist runner with the technical sexiness that I was looking for.
BF Running: So what is going to set your minimalist shoes apart from what is already on the market?
David: Runners will be able to relate to our product because it will have everything it needs and nothing more. We aren’t cutting corners, so the mission isn’t to keep the price point down, but to create a high quality minimalist shoe that is designed for performance. One of the things I’m most excited about is the leather that we will be using. It is one of the most breathable, high performance leather that dries in half the time of the leather that current shoe manufacturers use, but is also more expensive than regular leather.
BF Running: Will there be a vegan option?
David: Yes. We will also be making a shoe with a synthetic mesh.
BF Running: What principles do you keep in mind while designing the shoes? What’s non-negotiable?
David: Two non-negotiables are really what we are excluding from the shoe – cushioning, a shank (the hard plastic piece found in the middle of most traditional running shoes). It’s also really important to me to have the performance option with the breathable leather, as well as a laced option and a slip on option. The shoes also won’t be as disposable as some on the market – I expect Skora shoes to last 2-3 times longer than the other shoes out there. We also want to create a shoe that looks good – there’s no shame in wanting a minimalist shoe that looks awesome!
BF Running: When and where can we expect to see Skora shoes hit the shelves?
David: We are readying for the release of two minimalist running shoes focused on the male athlete beginning late 2011, and they will be found in specialty retailers around the world. Besides building and selling a product, I really want to focus on education, and it’s easier to do that with the relationships you build with specialty retailers versus big name corporations.
Just talking with David for even a couple minutes and you can hear the passion in his voice. Not just creating a shoe, David wants to educate the world on minimalist/barefoot running and create a high performance shoe that minimalists everywhere will want to run in to hit that next PR!
